The Meadow
Sketch & Color Comp

Sketch

This sketch required a bit of trust on the part of my editor.  ("Really Michael, it'll be great...just imagine...etc.")  It reveals one of the limitations of sketching in pen.  What I had in mind is impossible to draw in pen & ink.

Color Comp

One of the most important things about working in a loose manner with watercolor, is knowing where you're going with the painting.  The watercolor will never allow you to be to rigid in your thinking---it does what gravity wants it to do---but doing a small comp like this is invaluable.  It allows me to get some idea of how different glazes of color will interact with one another so that I can have a little more confidence going into the final painting.
