Here are the two different sketches for the cover.  Obviously the revision (bottom) ended up being the final cover.

 

Color Comp

I debated whether to even include this comp because it seems so meaningless.  I decided to include it because it shows why comps are useful---they answer your technical questions ahead of time.  I knew how I was going to paint the butterflies and the boy, but I wasn't sure how the soft clouds were going to look, so I tried them.  Once I saw them, I quit the comp and started on the painting, but you can still see the soft pencil lines where I planned to include the boy.
