Every book has a few pages I dread painting----usually because I'm not completely thrilled with the sketch, but can't think of anything better. This was one of those paintings. As I set to work on it though, everything worked better than I ever expected, and now it's one of my favorite paintings in the book. Julius wrote a lovely opening line that we were able to feature opposite the mother, and I just love the result. I think it's the best opening spread of any of my books.
