For
the title sequence, I wanted to "follow" the butterflies the
last few miles to John Farrington's house. I imagined them passing
overhead (the endpapers), passing a ladybug, (the title spread), then
finally descending onto John's house. (the first text
spread).
Color Comp
This
is the color comp for the first painted version of this
page. The first attempt at this painting looked very similar
and was originally intended to be the finished art. It was
fun, but after looking at it for a little while, it felt too
"heavy" to me---I wanted a lighter touch. So I
repainted it into it's final version which was used in the
book. That is why the comp and final art differ so much in
this instance.
